Dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis
White or greasy flakes with itch are common and may also affect eyebrows or the sides of the nose. Yeast and sebum play a role, but the condition is not caused by an unclean scalp.
Dry scalp
Flakes may be smaller, with tightness and dryness elsewhere. Frequent washing, hot water and harsh products can make it worse.
When might infection need diagnosis?
Patches of broken hair, hair loss, pain, swelling or discharge require dermatology assessment. Some scalp infections need oral treatment, so shampoo alone may not be enough.
